Get a Quote for Your Vehicle Solar System

Every vehicle solar installation is different, so we quote each system around the vehicle and how you plan to use it. A simple solar input for a portable panel is a very different job to a complete off-grid system with fixed panels, lithium batteries, BCDC charging, an inverter and Starlink.

Tell us what you drive, what you want to power and how long you normally spend off-grid. We can then recommend a setup that makes sense without loading your vehicle with gear you do not need.

  • Custom quotes based on your vehicle and power requirements
  • Fixed and portable solar options available
  • Solar integration with new or existing auxiliary batteries
  • 12V and inverter systems available as part of larger builds

What Goes Into a Vehicle Solar Installation?

A proper vehicle solar setup brings the panel, battery, charging, wiring and power distribution together as one system. The exact combination depends on your vehicle, available space, how long you spend off-grid and what you actually need to run.

How It Works

Fixed solar panels suit drivers who want charging happening automatically whenever the vehicle is exposed to sunlight. Portable solar gives you more flexibility, particularly when you want to park the vehicle or caravan in the shade and position the panel somewhere sunnier.

01

Fixed roof or canopy solar panels for automatic daytime charging

We visually inspect accessible high-voltage components, cabling and related systems for obvious wear, damage or faults. These systems need careful handling, so they are best left to trained technicians.

02

Portable solar inputs for flexible panel placement at camp

Where supported by the vehicle, we check battery-related data, performance indicators and system faults that may affect range or charging behaviour.

03

Combined fixed and portable solar setups for extra charging capacity

We inspect the charge port, charging behaviour and related systems to help identify issues with charging speed, connection faults or interrupted charging.

04

Solar-ready BCDC and auxiliary battery systems

Even EVs still rely on a 12V battery for key systems. A weak 12V battery can cause strange warning lights, start-up issues and electrical faults.

05

Systems designed around your battery capacity and expected power use

EV brakes often last longer because regenerative braking does some of the slowing down. That does not mean they can be ignored. Pads, discs, brake fluid and related components still need regular inspection.

Absolutely stoked with the work from Voltaic! The whole experience was fantastic from start to finish. The workmanship was top-notch, everything was done professionally, and you can tell the team genuinely cares about doing a great job.

A special mention to Finn, who even called me after hours after I’d picked up my car to make sure everything was okay and that everything was operating exactly as it should. That level of care and follow-up really says a lot about the team.

It’s great to see young apprentices getting the opportunity to learn and build their skills, and I’d happily recommend Voltaic to anyone. Thanks again for looking after my vehicle — really appreciate the quality work and genuine customer service!
Great work very neat very clean excellent service
I recently took my Ford Everest to Voltaic for them to install two Anderson plugs and a behind the grill light bar. Voltaic did a fantastic job and in particular young Finn, the technician on the job perfectly understood my requirements and did a faultless, neat install. I would highly recommend both Voltaic and their technician Finn
Great experience from Paul and the team at Voltaic
Paul went the extra mile and provided more than we required
Thanks

When Should You Add Solar to Your Vehicle?

Vehicle solar makes the most sense when your auxiliary battery needs to keep working after the engine is switched off. Alternator charging is great while you are driving, but it does not help much when you have been parked at camp for three days with the fridge still humming away.

You may want to install or upgrade your vehicle solar system if:

  • Your auxiliary battery is regularly running low while camping
  • You spend several days parked without driving the vehicle
  • You have added a larger fridge or freezer
  • You are upgrading from AGM to lithium batteries
  • You are increasing your battery capacity
  • You want to run Starlink while travelling or camping
  • You have added an inverter or 240V appliances
  • Your existing solar panel is no longer keeping up
  • You want a dedicated input for portable solar panels
  • You are building a new touring vehicle, caravan or camper setup

If your battery is flat before the camping chairs are even properly unfolded, there is probably room for improvement.

FAQs

Can you install solar panels on a 4WD?

Yes. Solar panels can be integrated into many 4WD auxiliary battery systems. Depending on the vehicle and setup, this may involve a fixed panel, portable solar input or a combination of both.

Can you install solar panels on a caravan?

Yes. We can design caravan solar systems around the battery setup, available roof space and the equipment you need to power. This can include fixed solar panels, portable solar inputs, battery charging and related 12V equipment.

Can you install solar on a ute?

Yes. Solar systems can be installed on touring and work utes, including vehicles with canopies, trays and auxiliary battery systems. We can design the system around the available space and how the ute is used.

Do I need a dual battery system for vehicle solar?

Most touring solar setups use an auxiliary battery because it allows you to store solar energy and run accessories without relying on the starter battery. The exact setup depends on the vehicle and what you want to power.

Can solar charge my battery while I am driving?

Yes, where the system is designed for it. A compatible DC-DC or BCDC charger can manage charging from both the vehicle and solar, allowing the auxiliary battery to receive power from the alternator while driving and solar when sunlight is available.

Can I use portable solar panels instead of fixed panels?

Yes. We can install a dedicated solar input so compatible portable panels can be connected when needed. Portable panels are handy when you want to park the vehicle in the shade while positioning the panel in direct sunlight.

Can I have fixed and portable solar together?

Yes. Some systems use fixed panels for everyday charging and a separate input for additional portable solar when more charging capacity is needed.

How much solar do I need for my 4WD or caravan?

That depends on your battery capacity, how much power your accessories use, how long you normally stay parked and how much charging you receive from the vehicle. We can size the system around your actual use rather than guessing from the panel wattage alone.

What can vehicle solar power?

Solar charges the auxiliary battery rather than directly powering everything in the vehicle. Depending on the battery and overall system size, stored energy can then be used for fridges, lights, phones, USB devices, communications equipment, Starlink and selected 240V appliances through a suitable inverter.

Solar can form part of a battery system designed to support Starlink. The required solar and battery capacity depends on how long you want to run it and what other accessories are using power at the same time.

Can you add solar to my existing dual battery system?

In many cases, yes. We first need to check the existing battery, charger, wiring and available solar input to make sure the components are compatible and the system can safely handle the additional charging source.

Where can a solar panel be mounted on a vehicle?

Depending on the setup, solar panels may be mounted to a suitable vehicle roof, canopy, roof system, trailer or other appropriate surface. Portable panels are another option where permanent mounting does not suit the vehicle.

Do you install complete off-grid vehicle power systems?

Yes. We can build larger systems combining solar, auxiliary batteries, DC-DC charging, 12V outputs, inverters and accessories. The system is designed around the vehicle, available space and what you need to run while travelling.
