What We Check During An EV Service

EV servicing is not just a quick look and a pat on the bonnet. Modern electric vehicles rely on several connected systems, and small faults can affect safety, range, charging and comfort.

01

High-Voltage Components

We visually inspect accessible high-voltage components, cabling and related systems for obvious wear, damage or faults. These systems need careful handling, so they are best left to trained technicians.

02

Battery Health & Range

Where supported by the vehicle, we check battery-related data, performance indicators and system faults that may affect range or charging behaviour.

03

Charging System

We inspect the charge port, charging behaviour and related systems to help identify issues with charging speed, connection faults or interrupted charging.

04

12V Battery

Even EVs still rely on a 12V battery for key systems. A weak 12V battery can cause strange warning lights, start-up issues and electrical faults.

05

Brakes

EV brakes often last longer because regenerative braking does some of the slowing down. That does not mean they can be ignored. Pads, discs, brake fluid and related components still need regular inspection.

06

Tyres

EVs are often heavier and deliver instant torque, which can increase tyre wear. We check tread, pressure and general tyre condition to support safety and range.

07

Suspension & Steering

We inspect suspension and steering components for wear, movement or damage. This is especially useful for heavier EVs, SUVs and vehicles used daily around Perth roads.

08

Cooling Systems

Battery packs, inverters, motors and chargers can rely on cooling systems to manage temperature. Coolant issues can affect performance, charging and long-term reliability.

09

Air Conditioning

In EVs, the air conditioning system can play a role in cabin comfort and thermal management. Poor cooling is not just annoying in a Perth summer. It can point to a system issue worth checking.

10

Diagnostics & Fault Codes

We scan supported systems for fault codes and warning signs. This helps spot issues early and gives you a clearer picture of what your EV needs.

Voltaic Auto Electrical
Based on 256 reviews
When every other auto electrician stepped back, Voltaic Auto Electrical Welshpool stepped up and got the job done perfectly on my 2012 Ford Ranger.

A special thanks to Dion and the ret of the team for thier professionalism, knowledge, and honest approach throughout the whole process. Great communication, quality workmanship, and excellent service from start to finish. Highly recommend these guys!
I had Max work on both a 1988 Jaguar and a 1983 Land Rover - 1980s British Car Electrics being what they are it wasn’t simple and Max stuck to it and did a great job
Massive thanks to the team at Voltaic Auto Electrical for the outstanding work on my 2025 Hilux.
I had a full canopy dual battery setup installed including a REDARC Alpha 50 system, lighting, Starlink hard wiring, rear work lights, switches, battery trays and more. From start to finish the communication, workmanship and attention to detail were top notch.
Anthony and the crew treated the build like it was their own vehicle. They called during the install with smart suggestions that genuinely improved the setup instead of just rushing the job. The rear canopy lighting, wiring layout, carpet board, battery mounting and overall finish came out absolutely mint.
Everything was done properly:
clean wiring
quality cable and protection
neat layout
factory-looking finish
tested and explained properly on pickup
You can tell these guys take pride in their work and don’t cut corners.
Couldn’t be happier with the final result and I’d happily recommend Voltaic to anyone wanting a quality touring, camping or 4WD electrical setup done right the first time.
Thanks again boys 👍🔥
Firstclass people, thank you very much...
Absolute legends. Paul helped me secure a part I urgently needed after I’d been struggling to find it elsewhere.
Honestly can't recommend Voltaic enough — took my car in and Dion looked after me from start to finish. Absolute legend. Sorted everything out super quickly, no dramas at all. The guy just knows his stuff, like genuinely knows what he's doing.

Didn't have to chase anyone up, didn't have to second-guess anything — Dion was on it from the moment I walked in. Super helpful the whole way through, kept me in the loop, and you could just tell he takes pride in his work. The kind of sparky you want working on your car.

If you need auto electrical work done, don't waste your time looking around — go to Voltaic and ask for Dion. 10/10, will 100% be back. 🤙

When Should You Book a Service for Your EV?

You should book an EV service at least once a year or according to your manufacturer’s service schedule. Many EVs also use distance-based intervals, commonly around every 15,000km, depending on the make and model.

You should also book sooner if you notice any of the following:

  • Reduced driving range
  • Charging taking longer than usual
  • Charging stopping unexpectedly
  • Warning lights on the dash
  • Air conditioning not cooling properly
  • Unusual brake noise or vibration
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • 12V battery issues
  • Coolant warnings
  • Any change in how the vehicle drives

If your EV starts acting weird, do not ignore it and hope it sorts itself out. Cars are clever now, but they are not that clever.

FAQs

What is an EV service?

An EV service is a maintenance checkup performed on an electric vehicle to ensure that it is running efficiently and safely.

What does EV servicing involve?

EV servicing involves checking the battery, brakes, tires, and other components to ensure that they are functioning properly. It may also involve software updates and other diagnostic checks.

How often should I service my EV?

The frequency of EV servicing depends on the make and model of the vehicle, as well as the manufacturer’s recommendations. Generally, EVs require less maintenance than traditional gas-powered vehicles. Typically, an annual servicing or one service every 15,000km should be sufficient.

Do electric cars need oil changes?

No, electric cars do not require oil changes because they do not have internal combustion engines.

Do electric cars need servicing?

Electric cars require regular maintenance checks to ensure that the battery, brakes, tires, and other components are functioning properly. They may also require software updates and other diagnostic checks.

Can I perform my own service?

While some basic maintenance tasks can be performed by the owner, such as checking tyre pressure and topping off fluids, it is generally recommended that EVs be serviced by trained professionals.

What should I do if my EV needs repairs?

If your EV requires repairs, it is important to take it to a dealership or repair shop such as ours that is equipped to service electric vehicles. It is also important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and repairs.

How long do EV batteries last?

The lifespan of an EV battery depends on a variety of factors, including the make and model of the vehicle, the age of the battery, and how the vehicle is driven and charged. Generally, EV batteries are designed to last for several years and can be replaced if necessary.
