Classic Car AC Retrofit Case Study

Custom A/C Install in a 1970 XY GT Falcon Replica

Aaron brought us a serious street machine—a 1970 Ford XY GT Falcon replica with a 445ci Dart stroker, 8/71 blower, and 832hp on tap. He had one question:
“Can you fit aircon… and can you do it in two days?”

The Build:
With no prior mock-up or measurements, the Falcon rolled into the shop. Here’s how we made it happen—cleanly and quickly:

  1. Electric Compressor: Traditional AC was a no-go with the blower and Gilmer setup. We opted for a compact electric unit, neatly mounted where the battery tray used to be.
  2. Lithium Battery & Boot Relocation: To power the compressor, we upgraded to a lithium battery and relocated it to the boot—freeing up space and improving weight distribution.
  3. Vintage Air System: Supplied by Rohan at Australian Auto Air, the under-dash system was integrated seamlessly. Factory-look finish, icy-cold vents.
  4. Custom Fabrication: Every bracket was custom-made. Nothing off-the-shelf. We engineered it all to fit perfectly.
  5. Hidden Wiring & Hoses: All lines and harnesses were routed through the guards for a clutter-free engine bay.

The Result:
In just 48 hours, we delivered a fully functional, show-quality A/C install—no shortcuts, no mess. Aaron drove away with 8-degree air and a bay that looked untouched.

Voltaic (in conjunction with Elite Tune) completed an outstanding mine spec upgrade of my dual-cab LandCruiser. High quality work, very tidy job all round and will be using them again. Would recommend.
OMG such a professional install in a timely fashion by the nicest crew I’ve met. I had planned on doing my electrics myself but honestly so stoked with these guys that I’ll just leave it to these pros.
Went to Voltaic to have a 2-way fitted — awesome workshop and staff. I was informed there was some very dodgy wiring from the previous second-battery installation: no fuses on some circuits, spaghetti wiring to auxiliary outlets, exposed wires on joins, and a long list of other issues.

Following their excellent advice, I went ahead with the repairs, and the finished job was absolutely brilliant and professional. The team went above and beyond my expectations.

If you want a job done properly, look no further.

FAQs

How much does it cost to retrofit a modern electrical system into my classic car?

The cost to retrofit a modern electrical system to your classic or vintage car will depend on the type of vehicle, its age, and what you want to do with it. Our prices start at around $5000 for a re-wire. As prices can vary greatly, it’s best to contact us for a quote on your vehicle.

What are the benefits of upgrading to a modern electrical system?

You know that feeling when you get ready to take your classic car for a drive and it just won’t start? A modern electrical system will keep your classic car running more reliably and more efficiently. Will a retrofit decrease the value of my classic car?

If you have a classic car that is 100% original, or used for concours competitions, a retrofit could impact its value. However, if your classic does not fall into these categories, a retrofit can help to increase your enjoyment of your vehicle with minimal impact on its value.

Can you add AC to a car that never had it?

Absolutely. With the right components and some custom work, we can retrofit a full AC system that fits and functions like it was factory.

Will adding AC ruin the original look of my classic?

Not with us. We custom-fit everything with hidden wiring, clean brackets, and tucked-away compressors to keep the factory look intact.

Do you provide any services for emergency and safety vehicles?
